Delving into data, study aims to improve and personalize massive online learning

first_img Read Full Story HarvardX-affiliated researchers have received a grant to study how massive open online courses (MOOCs) might be adapted and personalized based on the demographic data and usage patterns of students. The study, called “MOOCs Personalization for Various Learning Goals,” will be led by Sergiy Nesterko, a HarvardX research fellow, and Svetlana Dotsenko ’10, founder of the online educational platform Project Lever.“We are excited about the current scale of online learning,” said Nesterko, who earned a doctorate in statistics from Harvard and a bachelor’s degree in applied math from the University of Toronto. “The data from this study could help us to tailor learning experiences for individual students around the world.”The $21,450 award from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s MOOC Research Initiative (MRI) will help fund research for HarvardX, a University-wide effort to support faculty innovation in the use of technology in teaching and research. The Gates-funded MRI is part of a wider push to both explore the potential of MOOCs and expand access to new forms of credentialing through more personalized and lower cost educational avenues.Using aggregate data from HarvardX courses offered via the edX learning platform, Nesterko and Dotsenko aim to test whether there are substantive differences in learning outcomes (such as course completion and grades) and usage (time spent engaging with the course videos, assignments, and exams) between various student populations based upon self-reported information.last_img read more

You Have Nothing to Fear But

first_img Essential Reading! Get my first book: The Only Sale Guide You’ll Ever Need “The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.” Buy Now My life has been filled with terrible misfortunes–most of which never happened.–Mark TwainYour mind has an amazing ability to conjure up “terrible misfortunes.”You had an excellent first sales call with your dream client. You agreed on the next steps that would advance the opportunity for you and move your dream client closer to their goal. But you received an email canceling the meeting, asking you if you could reschedule in a few weeks. The first thing your mind conjures up is that your dream client is no longer interested. You’ve lost the opportunity. Someone persuaded her not to move forward. It’s over. It’s just as likely that your dream client got busy. It’s likely that some urgency in her world needs her attention, and as much as she’d like to move forward, something else is commanding her attention right now.Try this one. Have you ever had a client that took days to reply to your email? How about a client that didn’t reply to a text message … at all? Doesn’t your mind automatically conjure up the worst possible explanation as to why your dream client has responded? How You Respond to the Fear You Made UpHow you respond to events like these can be very different based on what you believe. If you believe the worse, you may overreact. I’ve had salespeople leave me the worst messages when I’ve struggled to return their calls during the process. The worst response ever sounded like this, “You haven’t returned my calls or emails, so I am going to assume you aren’t interested. I won’t call or email anymore.” (see the problem with ultimatums) In this salesperson’s mind, my inability to return their call and emails meant I was avoiding them, that I wasn’t interested, and that there was no opportunity. The reality was something different.I have a client with a complicated life. When he doesn’t reply to a call, a message, or a text, it simply means he is busy with his complicated life. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t really want to take your call, respond to your email, or reply to your text. But it’s disconcerting to everyone, until they learn it means nothing. It’s All YouThere is a certain arrogance to believe your dream client is thinking about you at all. Most of the time, you don’t even cross their mind. Instead of assuming the worst, assume that that your dream client’s best intentions were derailed by some urgency and act accordingly.QuestionsWhat kind of stories do you tell yourself that have no real basis in fact? What do assume the worst outcome? Why don’t we assume things are going to go our way? Most of the time, is your fear proven wrong?last_img read more

KKR Narine’s fastest fifty scripts KKR’s easy win over RCB

first_img× bl7_Travis Head bl07_Travis Head shot   –  The HIndu bl07_Travis Head shot   –  The HIndu Sunil Narine smashed the joint fastest IPL fifty in his sensational knock of 54 as Kolkata Knight Riders thrashed a hapless Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets to seal a Play—offs berth here today.Narine (54 from 17 balls) reached his fifty in just 15 balls, the same number of deliveries his KKR team—mate Yusuf Pathan had consumed in 2014 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, as he played some stunning shots much to the disappointment of the home crowd at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The West Indian and his opening partner Chris Lynn (50 from 22 balls) put on 105 runs from just 6.1 overs in a show of batting pyrotechnics as KKR chased down the target of 159 in a jiffy. They romped home with 4.5 overs to spare.Yuzvendra Chahal (4—0—39—1), Sreenath Aravind (1—0—26—0) and Samuel Badree (3—0—40—0) bore the brunt of the fury from Narine and Lynn. The KKR batting duo also notched up the record of the highest powerplay total in the IPL as the visiting side were 105 for no loss at the end of six overs. The win, their eighth of the season, sealed KKR a play— offs berth with 16 points from 12 matches. Already out of reckoning, RCB, on the other hand, slumped to their 10th defeat in 13 matches to remain at the bottom of league table with mere five points. It was Lynn who began the carnage as he hit Aniket Choudhary for two fours and a six in the first over. He continued in the same vein by smashing another six and two fours in the third over bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal.Narine took over after that. The first two deliveries Narine faced were dot balls but he sent the home crowd to a stunning silence in the fourth over by hitting three successive sixes and a four to cream off 25 runs from Badree. The next over was even more stunning and the hapless bowler was Aravind as a ruthless Narine sent him for four boundaries and a six to take 26 runs and raised his fifty.Lynn then took over and picked Chahal for the special treatment as he took 20 runs from the bowler with a four and two sixes to notch up the record of most runs in powerplay.Narine got out immediately after that and Lynn followed suit in the next over but by then irreparable damage had been done on RCB as KKR were on course for an easy win.Colin de Grandhomme (31) and captain Gautam Gambhir (14) took KKR on the threshold of victory before Manish Pandey (4 not out) completed the formalities as KKR reached 159 for four in 15.1 overs.Earlier, Travis Head smashed a brilliant unbeaten 75 after Mandeep Singh’s 52 as RCB recovered from a top—order collapse to post 158 for six after being put into bat.The big names like Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and A B de Villiers were dismissed cheaply as RCB slumped to 34 for three in the fifth over. Mandeep (52) and Head then stitched 71 runs for the fourth wicket to take the score past 150—run mark.Head hit two sixes and a four from the final three deliveries as RCB took 21 runs in a late flourish.Mandeep hit four boundaries and a six in his 43—ball knock while Head struck three fours and five sixes in his 47—ball unbeaten knock. The match began in a dramatic fashion with Gayle, who has failed miserably this season, getting out in the first ball bowled by Umesh Yadav. The West Indian tried to defend but the ball moved away and took a leading edge to land at the hands of KKR captain Gautam Gambhir at short cover. In comes Kohli and the India captain negotiated six deliveries for two runs before he was dropped by Piyush Chawla off the bowling of Yadav in the third over.Kohli (5), who has struggled this season, did not take advantage of the dropped catch and was out the next ball with Yadav having the last laugh. The change of pace did the trick as Kohli was beaten by Yadav’s delivery to be out LBW.Mandeep, on the other hand, hit some lusty blows at the other end, including a six off Chris Woakes, but another wicket —— in the form of de Villiers —— fell in fifth over.De Villiers, who also had a season to forget, hit a four off Sunil Narine but in the next ball, he was out clean—bowled while trying to play a sweep shot of a fullish delivery. With their best three batsmen gone for a meagre score, RCB reached 63 for three at the halfway stage with Mandeep and Head holding fort. The duo batted through a rain—forced break of over 30 minutes with Mandeep reaching to his fifty shortly after resumption. But he got out immediately after reaching his fifty in the 16th over before Head took the score to 158 for 6 with some late big hitting. Michigan State Players Star In Well-Produced Locker Room Dance Video

first_imgMichigan State players walking down a tunnel.YouTube/MSUSpartanVideoMichigan State is the defending Big Ten champion, and while Michigan and Ohio State have been getting most of the attention in the league as we near the season, the Spartans appear pretty pumped for the year to kick off.On Thursday, a group of Michigan State players created a locker room dance video, and with help from the program’s video team, it is incredibly well-produced. The video is set to Future’s hit “Wicked” from his 2016 mixtape Purple Reign.Michigan State opens its season with FCS squad Furman, but things heat up pretty quickly from there. The Spartans have a week two bye, and then head to South Bend to play a very strong Notre Dame team, and follow that game up with Wisconsin at home. At +825, the Spartans are tied for the third best odds to win a Big Ten title this year with Iowa, but are fairly well behind Ohio State (+168) and Michigan (+233). If they repeat, they certainly will have earned it.last_img read more

Ministers set to discuss timing of carbon tax legal challenges during meeting

first_imgOntario Attorney General Doug Downey says his government has until August to file a notice of appeal to the Supreme Court after that province’s appeal court upheld the federal carbon tax in a split decision.“It’s my understanding that (Saskatchewan) may be looking to have some of the cases consolidated so that … the Supreme Court’s hearing more than one at a time,” said Downey. He said there are pros and cons about presenting the cases together, but wouldn’t comment on his government’s preference or strategy.“From what I understand Saskatchewan is asking for an extension or for more time.” It argues a federally imposed carbon tax on consumers is unconstitutional but lost its case in a 3-2 split decision in its own appeal court. The provincial government appealed to the Supreme Court and says it has a tentative hearing date set for Dec. 5.Alberta Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer says his government is trying to play catch-up to Saskatchewan and Ontario when it comes to mounting its own legal challenge. He says it’s important for the ministers to compare notes about what they’re hearing from their legal teams and he wants the provinces to work together so that the matter is heard by the Supreme Court in a “co-ordinated and thoughtful way.”Schweitzer says he wants Alberta’s case heard by the Alberta Appeal Court before the country’s highest court rules on the issue, so the Supreme Court has the opportunity to consider the province’s evidence when it makes its decision.“We’re trying to work out (the) strategy to make sure each province can bring forward its strongest case to the Supreme Court,” he said. SASKATOON — Attorneys general from Alberta and Ontario say they will discuss the timeline of the different legal challenges launched against the federal carbon tax when they meet in Saskatoon today. The two justice ministers will be joined by their legal teams and their counterparts from New Brunswick and Saskatchewan.Saskatchewan is hosting the meeting to discuss the appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.center_img — by Stephanie Taylor of The Canadian PressThe Canadian Presslast_img read more
