Great Smoky Mountain National Park to begin opening on Saturday

first_imgPhoto from Getty Images This Saturday, Great Smoky Mountain National Park will begin a phased reopening when many roads and trails open to visitors once again. “The health and safety of employees, partners, volunteers, visitors, and local residents remains the highest priority in park reopening decisions,” the park said in a press release. Outdoor Revival, a new podcast created by “seasoned outdoor industry professionals,” aims to help anyone and everyone who loves the outdoors better understand how they can safely and responsibly recreate during the pandemic, their website says.  The park will implement new safety measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Campgrounds, picnic pavilions, visitor centers and many secondary roads will remain closed during the first reopening phase. Park officials ask the public to follow health orders, avoid crowding, practice Leave No Trace principles and avoid high-risk outdoor activities.  “Even though we are a band of seasoned outdoor professionals, we could not make sense of all the information and mis-information we were getting from the mainstream media,” the podcast creators said on their website. “So we decided to take it upon ourselves to seek out the top figures in the outdoor industry and create a resources for all who love the outdoors but want to keep themselves as well as everyone around them safe and healthy.”  West Virginia anglers can fish for free through May 31center_img Great Smoky Mountain National Park to begin opening on Saturday The waiver applies only to fishing licenses but includes a waiver for trout and conservation stamps. Deadline Trading

first_imgThe 2014 July 31st trading deadline has come and gone for another year.  As usual, the rich teams robbed the poor teams of some of their top players.  For example, the two best pitchers for the Boston Red Sox were traded to Oakland who now has obtained 4 quality pitchers since the first of July.  Teams like the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros have lost most of their top players through trades.  Major league owners continue to keep this rule in play hoping to buy a World Series Championship. The struggling teams say they are willing to sell these players because it is the only way to rebuild a franchise that has been losing.  Just an observation on my part–the Cubs were just beginning to win consistently this year when they traded their top two pitchers.  Since then it has been a free fall to the bottom.  At this rate, they and Houston may have a winning team about 2020.I know Curt Flood started free agency which then translated into “every player hoping to hit the salary bonanza by being traded to a good team”.  I still believe baseball was better when you stayed with the team that drafted you.  This way teams knew who their players were going to be and you didn’t have the worry of someone buying them away every time they began to play better as a big leaguer.last_img read more

Byron camp on weather watch

first_img “It’s a tough task. He has to carry his Group One penalty and give weight to most of the field. We are playing with the big boys now. He has a reasonably good draw (four) and there is a fair bit of pace on his side.” The other horse in the line-up burdened with a Group One penalty is Society Rock. He signed off last term with a fifth place behind Maarek at Ascot, just a month after beating Gordon Lord Byron by three-quarters of a length in the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock. Trainer James Fanshawe told www.jamesfanshawe.com: “Society Rock is our flagship horse and he has been going nicely at home. Kieren Fallon came to ride him the other day and he didn’t get off and say he would rather ride something else. “He has a Group One penalty so has to give most of them 5lbs and the good fillies Mince and Tickled Pink 8lbs. We are looking forward to running him.” Jim Goldie is looking forward to running his two speedsters Hawkeyethenoo and Jack Dexter, saying: “A bit of rain would help. I hope it comes early enough to get into the ground. Rain tonight would be fine and good ground would suit them both. “Hawkeyethenoo is in top form. He ran a nice race at Newmarket and he seems in good order. He’s a course and distance winner and he beat Society Rock last time they met (at Ascot). He’s got the form, you just need luck in running. I quite like his draw (14). I think the race will develop in that area. “Jack Dexter won the Cammidge (at Doncaster). He would probably like more cut in the ground but we are running him to see if he handles good ground. If he doesn’t, then we might put him away until the back end.” Trainer Tom Hogan would like the rain to stay away from the Knavesmire for his Duke Of York Clipper Logistics Stakes challenger Gordon Lord Byron. The five-year-old won at the highest level in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp in October and has since been on his travels, running in Hong Kong and Dubai. “It’s good to get him back on grass again. Hopefully we won’t get too much rain. Even though he’s won on soft ground he’s better on good ground,” said County Tipperary-based Hogan. center_img Press Associationlast_img read more
