The Accompong Town Maroons in the southern parish of St. Elizabeth, have been commended for being a beacon of hope and a shining example of peace and prosperity for the rest of the nation. Two murders in 280 yearsFinance Minister Audley Shaw, in an address on Saturday, to mark the 280th anniversary celebrations to mark the signing of the Peace Treaty between the Accompong Town Maroons and the British in 1738, said the community is the most peaceful place in Jamaica, registering only two murders in 280 years.“On this day when we are celebrating freedom and Jamaica is celebrating independence, we have a lot of work to do. We need now to ensure that we recognize that freedom means that we have freedom to be responsible citizens,” Shaw said.“Freedom means that we must educate our children. We need to be free to promote peace, not war; and we need to be free to be productive in all that we do with honest labor.”Hope for redemption and nation rebuildingShaw said the Maroon experience is a prime example that there is hope for redemption and rebuilding of the nation.“After 280 years of your own story of courage and hard work we have had too much of the wrong things that have held us down as a people. But I believe in restoration,” he said.Restoration“The Maroons tell us there can be restoration and the Bible tells us that too. We need to restore and repair the breach of love and respect for human life. We need to restore the breach of productivity and we need to restore the breach of protecting and caring and nurturing our children, understanding that they are our future.”The treaty ended decades of hostilities, and made Accompong Town a sovereign state, with full freedom for its inhabitants, and complete jurisdiction over their territory, including judicial powers, with the exception of the death penalty.Meanwhile, the Finance Minister told the participants that the Government will be putting plans in place to ensure that all Jamaicans who have an interest in agriculture and other areas of the productive sector, have ease of access to idle lands across the island, so they can quickly put these into productive purposes.“There is too much idle land in Jamaica and people want land to produce and create wealth,” he said.
The 2017 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) paints a promising picture about the drug and sexual behaviors U.S. high school students report, but the findings leave room for concern – especially among groups of young people who report multiple health risks. “The health of our youth reflects the Nation’s wellbeing,” said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, M.D. “In the past decade, there have been substantial improvements in the behaviors that put students most at risk for HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. However, we can’t yet declare success when so many young people are getting HIV and STDs, and experiencing disturbingly high rates of substance use, violence, and suicide.” Student sexual behavior In 2017, there was another decline in the percentage of high school students who report that they have ever had sex and those who have had four or more sexual partners – the lowest levels since CDC began conducting the survey in 1991. Low use of condomsUnfortunately, a lower percentage of students who engage in sex report using condoms. The correct use of condoms helps to prevent the transmission of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and 15- to 24-year-olds account for half of all new STD infections in the U.S. The self-reported data show that students who:Ever had sex: Declined from 47.8% in 2007 to 39.5% in 2017.Had four or more sexual partners: Declined from 14.9% in 2007 to 9.7% in 2017.Used a condom during last sex: Declined from 61.5% in 2007 to 53.8% in 2017. Student reports of other factors that have been shown to increase the risk for HIV and STDs – like drug-use, experiences of violence, and poor mental health – remain troubling. Illicit drug use and new findings on prescription opioids While the percentage of students who reported ever using select illicit drugs (defined here as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, inhalants, hallucinogens, or ecstasy) was down, the survey found that 14 percent of U.S. high school students (1 in 7) reported misusing prescription opioids. The misuse of prescription opioids can lead to overdose as well as injection drug use, which increases the risk for HIV. The percentage of students who:Ever used select illicit drugs: Declined from 22.6% in 2007 to 14.0% in 2017.Ever misused prescription opioids: Was 14.0% in 2017 (first year for data). Substantial levels of violence and persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness Nationally, 1 in 5 students reported being bullied at school, and 1 in 10 female students and 1 in 28 male students reported having been physically forced to have sex. Also in 2017, the proportion of students reporting persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness increased to 1 in 3. The percentage of students who:Were bullied at school: Has not significantly decreased from 19.9% in 2009 to 19.0% in 2017.Were forced to have sex: Has not significantly improved from 7.8% in 2007 to 7.4% in 2017.Females: Has not significantly decreased from 11.3% in 2007 to 11.3% in 2017.Males: Has decreased from 4.5% in 2007 to 3.5% in 2017. Felt sad or hopeless: Has increased from 28.5% in 2007 to 31.5% in 2017. “Today’s youth are making better decisions about their health than just a decade ago,” said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. “But, some experiences, such as physical and sexual violence, are outside their control and continue at painfully high levels. Their experiences today have powerful implications for their lives tomorrow.”Student health: schools central but can’t do it alone The CDC recommends schools, families, and communities must work together to make sure the nation’s youth stay healthy now and into their adulthood. Research shows that schools and families can protect against these risks by working to increase the connections youth have to schools and adults. Families can do this by providing strong family support, modeling healthy behaviors, engaging in meaningful conversations early and often, and staying engaged in their adolescents’ daily lives. Schools can do this by building environments that provide safety and connectedness for all students, delivering evidence-based health education with a focus on building skills for healthy decision-making, and connecting students to necessary health services. These groups can work together to provide more intentional messages, skills, and mental health support for teens, so that encouraging trends can continue and the troubling trends can be reversed. “We know that being connected to schools and safe adults is key to protecting the health of adolescents,” said Kathleen Ethier, Ph.D., director of CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health. “Students are more likely to thrive if they feel safe and have a sense of belonging – and if they have parents, adults, teachers, and friends who they know care about their success.” The CDC and its partners work on multiple levels to address strategies that protect and improve young people’s lives – including funding, implementing, and evaluating programs that address many of these risks and protective factors.
CMC – A Fly Jamaica plane with more than 100 passengers on board made an emergency landing at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) early on Friday morning. The 757 Boeing aircraft was 45 minutes into the flight to Canada when it encountered difficulties and the pilot deciding to return to the CJIA with the aircraft coming to a stop have encountering a heavy bank of sand at the far end of the airstrip.Initial reports said that at least five people were injured and taken to hospital. All the passengers have been evacuated and the police and security officials have since cordoned off the area.
PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – President of Haiti Jovenel Moise yesterday named Fritz-William Michel, an executive in the Ministry of Economy and Finance, as his fourth prime minister since he became head of state in 2017.Michel replaces Jean Michel Lapin, who said he was stepping down in the interest of the country. Lapin told the local newspaper, Le Nouvelliste, that in offering his resignation “I have made a choice for Haiti”. Lapin, the former culture and communications minister, was named to the post on March 21, three days after the Chamber of Deputies voted to dissolve the six-month-old government of then prime minister, Jean-Henry Ceant. In a Twitter posting on Monday night, Moise named the virtually known technocrat Michel to head his government. Moise expected to formalize the position in an official decree later. The new prime minister’s appointment followed talks on Sunday and Monday between Moise and the leaders of the two chambers of parliament.Lapin had become the third head of government under President Moise, who himself came to office in February 2017.Media reports had earlier indicated that Moise had approached three people, including a woman, to replace Lapin, who had come to the office less than a month after thousands of people took to the streets across the country demanding better living conditions and the departure of the president.Moise faces an uphill task in getting his new nominee accepted by legislators who had used various strategies including removing furniture from the Chamber and failing to report for work in a bid to block a vote on Lapin’s nomination. The opposition parties here have accused Moise of embezzlement, but the head of state has defended himself against the report of the Superior Court of Accounts and Administrative Litigation (CSA/CA) into programmes and projects funded by the PetroCaribe, an oil alliance of many Caribbean states with Venezuela to purchase oil on conditions of preferential payment. The report had found that significant shortcomings have been associated with the planning and implementation of development programmes and projects funded by the PetroCaribe Fund. The CSC/CA audit found that significant shortcomings have been associated with the planning and implementation of development programmes and projects funded by the PetroCaribe Fund during the administration of former president Michel Martelly. The Court made it clear that, overall, relevant documents were missing in most of the projects and contracts reviewed and as a result, it was impossible to conduct a comprehensive audit of several projects. For example, the 610-page report found that in 2014, for the same project to rehabilitate the Borgne – Petit Bourg de Borgne road section, the State signed two identical contracts worth more than 39 million Gourdes (One Gourde=US$0.01 cents) with two separate companies.Moise, before he came to power in 2017, headed a company which received more than 33 million Gourdes to do the road work, though the company in principle did nothing but grow bananas.CARICOM leaders at their summit in St. Lucia earlier this month agreed to send a prime ministerial delegation to Haiti comprising St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, the CARICOM chairman, as well as the prime ministers of Jamaica and the Bahamas. The communique had indicated that the prime ministerial delegation would visit Port-Au-Prince “in order to inform the Community of the situation in that country”.It gave no indication when the visit would take place.

Over the years, like every other team in the world, the Nigerian senior men’s national team has had various jerseys at different times. The green and white signature colours of the country have remained, but patterns, designs and even fitting have changed. Some of these jerseys were received very well by Nigerian fans, some not so much. However, Nigerian fans always wear the colours with pride to support their beloved Super Eagles.Looking back at the various jerseys, one seems to be loved more than the others. Adorned by arguably the best set of players Nigeria has ever produced – the Tunisia 1994 African Cup of nations winning team with the likes of Nigeria’s all time leading goalscorer, Rashidi Yekini, Peter Rufai, Stephen Keshi, Finidi George, Samson Siasia, Daniel Amokachi, Augustine Eguavoen, Sunday Oliseh, Benedict Iroha, Austin ‘JayJay’ Okocha and others. The jersey was also worn at FIFA World Cup in USA, 1994 which was Nigeria’s very first appearance at the tournament. The jersey brings back a lot of pleasant memories to Nigerian football fans. Memories of a great football era. Many other jerseys have been similar in style but this jersey stands out. A lot of Nigerians, especially those who experienced those times would love to have a replica. Is this truly Nigeria’s best jersey ever?RelatedNike Unveil Eagles World Cup Jersey (Photos)February 7, 2018In “National Team”Our Aim Is Perfection For FIBA 2019 Says AminuNovember 2, 2018In “AFCON Insider”T20 World Cup Qualifiers: Nigeria Cricket Team Have “Not Much To Lose” – Ukwenya (AUDIO)October 18, 2019In “Cricket”
It is only Matchday 10 but there is already a real battle brewing at the top of the La Liga already with Valencia hot on the heels of Barcelona who sit pretty on top and Real Madrid slowly but surely picking up steam. Atletico Madrid remain unbeaten and this season sure looks like it will be keenly contested.Second from bottom Alaves host unbeaten Valencia on Saturday afternoon. Alaves are having a torrid start to the season with only one win in their first nine games while Valencia are still one of the only three unbeaten teams left in the La Liga. Valencia already have matched their best ever start to a La Liga season after going 9 games unbeaten last weekend and against Alaves, there’s the very big possibility of a new club record being set by Marcelino and his wards. Valencia surely look like they want to push on.Atletico Madrid host Villarreal at the Wanda Metropolitano where they have look unimpregnable. Only Luis Suarez has scored a league goal there but Villarreal are in a decent enough form to cause trouble for La Rojiblancos who are still not firing on all cylinders just yet. Atletico remain unbeaten and they surely would look to get something out of this.Barcelona travel to the San Mames unbeaten and on top of the standings. Majority of the first team are well rested after being excluded from the trip to Real Murcia. Gérard Deulofeu had another inspiring game in the Cup and he will be looking to start again alongside Messi and Suarez. Bilbao are having an indifferent start to the season and have not beaten Barça in the league since moving to the new San Mames. This fixture also has mostly been a low-scoring one.Sevilla host Leganes in the last action on Saturday at the Ramon Sanchez Pijquan. Eduardo Berrizo’s side have had a few weeks to forget but Leganes might not be so easy to prey on. Leganes are 5th on the log and are unbeaten in their last six games – a run that includes fixtures against Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. Sevilla though, remain unbeaten at home.On Sunday Getafe host Real Sociedad who have a very good away record and are scoring alot of goals. Eibar host Levante in a midtable game that looks like goals might be hard to come by, considering Eibar have only scored once at home this season and Levante have only scored once away this season. Bottom-placed Malaga host Celta Vigo in the La Rosaleda hoping to record their first win of the season. The home side have won this fixture in the last 4 seasons and Malaga would hope they can continue that streak.Real Madrid travel to Catalonia to face Girona in what is the most high-profile match on Sunday. Real needed two penalties to get past Segunda B side Fuenlabrada in the Copa but their imperious away form is expected to continue against a struggling Girona who only recorded their second win of the season last Monday against fellow strugglers Deportivo la Coruna. Cristiano Ronaldo is still struggling to get going with the goals but expect Madrid to take this.On Monday night Espanyol host Real Betis who have started brightly while Las Palmas and Deportivo la Coruna finish of an interesting weekend of football also on Monday night. Deportivo sacked Pepe Mel after the loss to Girona and Cristobal Parralo will be in charge of this one.Related

From its home overlooking St Katharine Docks the company has enjoyed a fruitful few years. It recently placed 12th in Inc’s 5000 Europe of the continent’s fastest growing companies. Its focus is on a sleek and simplistic customer experience (which includes a flat 2% commission) and the way the company delivers this is by building all its products in-house. We spoke to Smarkets Press Officer Pascal Lemesre about this growth, the company’s ambitions in and beyond gambling, and the differences in how Smarkets operates compared to most companies across sectors.SBC: Do you see yourselves as industry leaders when it comes to embracing change?Pascal: That’s our main point of difference. Gambling is an age old industry, and a great deal of people still have a rather murky perception of it. We want to change this by approaching things from a different mindset. Fintech is a buzzword at the moment and we view ourselves more like a fintech startup, although I guess we’re past that point and now a fast-growing company of 80 people and still keen on hiring. Pascal Lemesre, SmarketsWe want to avoid following the path that every other bookmaker has taken. We’re a tech company, entertainment and gambling are words we typically avoid. The way we built the product, which offers a 2% commission, means our odds are often the best in the world.Simplicity is at the heart of what we do. We don’t do casinos and we avoid confusing people. We don’t go after easy wins; we’re a tech company that’s trying to build the fairest betting exchange in the world.I don’t think we’ll ever go down the casino path; it’s not of interest to us. Jason’s (Smarkets CEO Jason Trost) background is in stock trading; he wanted to build an event exchange for traders rather than another betting platform that offers customers poor value.SBC: Smarkets recently placed 12th on Inc’s list of the 5000 fastest growing companies in Europe…Pascal: Yep, we’ve done really well with some growth awards. We were top five in the Sunday Times Tech Track 100, which is incredibly reputable, and the Inc award is another that we like to be associated with. Companies like Deliveroo, AirBnB and Uber are the ones we are looking to emulate in terms of industry disruption. Most newcomers to the betting industry do the same old thing. That’s not us. You won’t see us bombarding people with shouty TV advertising, our marketing has mainly worked organically by word of mouth. We’ve focused on the product and offering the best platform and odds. We’ve been so profitable because we’ve done this with a small team. In fact, I think we’re one of the most profitable companies per employee in Europe.Betting is not the end goal for Jason and Smarkets. His aim is for Smarkets to become a Tier 1 technology company. This is one of the reasons we’ve opened the Santa Monica office in LA, and he’s over there now hunting the best software engineers in the business. They’re investigating other opportunities and the West Coast is a good base for this.SBC: The importance of data driven marketing in 2017?Pascal: The marketing team we have here comprises of data scientists, software engineers and creatives. We’re hiring more digital marketers right now, but it should be as many tech guys as there are non-techs.We see fully understanding our customers as the top priority. Data is at the heart of everything we do, and all the products we build are in-house. Now we want to start making more of a push and tell people why they should be using Smarkets.SBC: Tell us about the company culture at SmarketsPascal: So we’re also trying to make a difference in the workplace. The guiding principle is self-management. Hiring the right people is important and everyone in the company does interviews. We’re an ever-expanding web connecting the dots of who hired who. We even have a cool infographic to show this.Hiring good people is vital, but so is trust. Trusting employees to work on what they think is best is vital, as long as there is communication between teams. It’s open and far from a top down system, everything is up for discussion and the autonomy is important. As for the set-your-own-salary policy, the way it works is this. We have salary review windows every six months, and the process is that you can submit a review, fill out a form and open yourself up for feedback. Those in your team and others up to and including Jason will come back to you with their feedback and give their opinion on what they think you should be earning. You read this and the idea is that you take this into consideration with your final salary bid. This is all public knowledge within the company; it’s an honour system which breeds an honest review and rewards good and hard work. It’s working well so far. We do a lot of other things to make it a great place to work. We’ve three chefs working for us full time, breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided and the gong goes at lunchtime to ensure we all eat together every day.We also don’t count holiday. It’s all about trust and we’ve had few problems with the policy. Our annual report for 2016 will be out in Spring and it will again show superb growth after our breakthrough year in 2015.We have a lot of cool stuff planned this year too which should help this continue!SBC: Thought on a mobile first approach?Pascal: Our app is in development and will be released in the imminent future. We’ve built it in house and we’ve been working hard developing and testing it to get it right, and to keep it aligned with our company philosophy. We could have spent big and used third-party sources to get an app out quicker, but we have a policy to build things in house as we have so many great engineers. The lack of outsourcing is good for the overall product.SBC: How has the QPR sponsorship gone for Smarkets?Pascal: We upgraded to front of shirt in 2015, and it’s been a very cool thing for us and good for brand validity. It’s great going to the stadium and seeing our logo everywhere and we’ve had lots of interest in the 0% commission offer on QPR games. We will continue to look at other sponsorship opportunities going forward as we look to target high level traders, the ones interested in moving from stocks to sports trading. We’re happy to have punters on the platform taking advantage of our great odds but our priority is the high level traders.
