Drought situation dampens Dasara celebrations in Karnataka

first_imgThe world-famous Dasara celebrations will remain a low-key affair in Mysuru (Mysore) in Karnataka in view of the prevailing drought conditions, which has led more than 100 farmers to commit suicide.Karnataka’s Revenue Minister and Mysuru district-in-charge minister V Srinivas Prasad told reporters that the state government has decided to deliberately celebrate Dasara in a subdued manner to respect the sentiments of the farmers.”Hundreds of farmers have committed suicide unable to repay their debts or owing to crop losses. The situation does not call for a pompous Dasara celebration this year,” he added.Every year, the government celebrates Dasara in a grand manner, attracting tourists from world over. Performances by renowned artistes from India and abroad, film screening, entertainment shows, sports meet, an exhibition, a theme park, and thrill rides are normally part of Dasara celebrations.
