“SIXTY SECONDS IN TOUCH”

first_imgAnother edition of 60 seconds in touch, brought to you from Kawana Waters on the Sunshine Coast…(first time this has ever been written from Queensland!) * I’m sitting here at the computer overlooking the beautiful Quad Park fields where tomorrow afternoon the 2nd Youth World Cup will kick off. Games begin at 1:00pm make sure you get down and have a look if you can. * The atmosphere is already great, how can you go past the Cook Islanders who turned up for the Managers meeting in their bright yellow shirts and with video recorders in hand? It’s a fantastic thing for these Touch lovers to travel and get together for the event only held every four years, what a great experience for all involved! * The Opening Ceremony is being held tomorrow morning at the Kings Beach Amphitheatre, it starts officially at 9:00am but be there early for a sheet under the shade (or out of the rain, depending on the weather.) All athletes will march past and have their National anthem played, there will be a couple of speeches and the Gubbi Gubbi Dance Tribe will welcome the tournament to the Sunshine Coast. * Congratulations to Roxy Winder from the Gold Coast for being selected as Australia’s flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony. Roxy has competed at both Youth World Cups, several other Australian Junior tours and is a current member of the Australian Womens Open National Training Squad. Congratulations to Troy Malcolm also, one of Australia’s longest serving and most-capped junior representatives. He’s leading the Under 20 Men as Captain and with the experience that comes from being a part of the World Cup winning Mens Open side in 2003, Troy is no doubt an incredibly important member of the entire Australian team. Finally, congratulations to all selected Australian team captains: Mens 20 Years- Troy Malcolm Mixed 20 Years- Katie Shaw and Matt McDonald Womens 20 Years- Claire Winchester Mens 18 Years- Ji Bonner and Aaron Tandek Mixed 18 Years- Claire Giarola and Dean Springfield Womens 18 Years- Lauren Barclay * Don’t forget to bring your umbrella down to Quad Park, there’s been the odd drop of rain around and it’s predicted to last for the next few days. * Keep an eye on the ATA website, which will provide links to the FIT website and the Sporting Pulse website for all of the latest news and stories. * There’s been some last minute withdrawals and inclusions to the Aussie sides after injuries, there will no doubt be a story in the coming days on those given the last minute opportunity to represent Australia. * Don’t forget to send a hero email or fax to the Aussie sides [email protected] or fax (02) 6285 2820, they have certainly appreciated those received already and it no doubt builds their confidence! * In other news (yes there is other news besides the Youth World Cup) the NSW Junior State Cup is fast approaching. It’s being held on the 19th and 20th of February and applications close this Friday, January 21st. Get in quick! * A massive 86 teams have nominated for the Yass Knockout, being held on January 29th and 30th. With many interestingly named teams and many travelling from Sydney and other NSW regions, it’s sure to be an awesome tournament. Check out www.nswtouch.com.au for all the info. * The Victorian Touch Team titles are taking place on April 2 and 3, see www.victouch.com.au if you want more information. Touch in Victoria is steadily growing and events like this are finding their way onto the calendar more regularly. It’s great to see! * ATA’s Techincal Support chicky and National Teams organiser (not sure of exact title) Maree Curran, would like to wish her husband Matt (Australian Mens Open representative) a very happy third Wedding Anniversary for today (January 18th). She says she loves you, misses you and is hoping you’re coping without her while she’s at the Youth World Cup. * That’s about all for now, don’t forget to keep an eye on the websites for all the latest YWC (that’s my abbreviation because I’m already sick of writing the full title and the games don’t even start until tomorrow) news. * Remember any story ideas or requests for help with media can be sent to Rachel Moyle at [email protected] By Rachel Moylelast_img
