After less than a week, the Fighting Irish staff told him that they plan to go in another direction.Sheffield is a composite four-star player, per 247Sports. The site ranks him No. 236 overall in the class of 2019.He is the No. 38 overall wide receiver, and is ranked ninth of all players from Tennessee. He is from the small town of Thompson’s Station, just south of Nashville.Notre Dame’s decision could open the door for Tennessee to land TJ Sheffield. This afternoon, he revealed what happened. It sounds like Fighting Irish wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander accepted his commitment prematurely, and had to tell him this morning that the school would no longer be doing so.pic.twitter.com/wmtPDAClRd— Tj Sheffield (@the_tj2) July 11, 2018It is unfortunate that Sheffield cannot attend the school of his choice. Luckily, though, he is not without options.Notre Dame split the early votes in 247’s crystal ball with Tennessee, his in-state power out of the SEC, and Purdue, a Notre Dame rival on the upswing entering year two under Jeff Brohm. He has a number of other pretty decent offers, including Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Louisville, UNC, Ohio State, Penn State, and Virginia Tech.Obviously, you never truly know if all of those are actually committable, as Sheffield just learned. Still, he should have his pick of a number of strong schools to choose from.Notre Dame already has 17 players committed. The Fighting Irish class is ranked seventh in the country. Three-star Cam Hart is the lone wide receiver in the group right now.
